From Heartbreak to Hope: The Journey That Sparked CatCrazy and Crazy Good Cat Food

The Truth About Cat Food (and How It Changed Everything for Me)

Have you ever wondered why cats throw up so often? Or why some deal with constipation, dull coats, achy joints, or even allergies — sometimes when they’re still young?

I used to ask myself those same questions. And after years of research (and heartbreak), I’ve learned that almost every part of a cat’s health comes down to two things: what we feed them — the good and the bad.

My Story: When Heartbreak Turned Into a Mission

Hi, I’m Petra Luna, and if you’ve seen my CatCrazy Channel on YouTube, you already know how passionate I am about cats. What you might not know is that two of our beloved cats — Chopin and Wazoo — passed away after eating tainted chicken jerky treats.

We had no idea what was happening when they got sick. Even our vet couldn’t explain how a one-year-old cat could suffer kidney failure. That’s when I knew I had to find answers. Were we the only ones going through this?

We sent the treats to a lab — and what we discovered changed everything. They contained traces of a cheap preservative that’s toxic to cats. Dogs can tolerate it (even though it’s not healthy for them either), but cats cannot. Without realizing it, we were feeding our cats poison. I felt so guilty. And I knew that if it happened to us, other cat parents were likely going through the same heartbreak.

What’s Really in Cat Food?

So, I started reading every cat food label I could find — and what I saw was shocking. Many “trusted” major brands were loaded with fillers, preservatives, and mystery ingredients that have no place in a cat’s body.

If you see something like “powdered cellulose” on your cat food label, that’s just a fancy term for sawdust. Yep — sawdust, used as filler because it’s cheaper than meat.

And that’s just the beginning. Even foods labeled “premium” can hide disturbing ingredients like:

  • Meat byproducts — often carcass remnants, diseased animals, or even euthanized pets.

  • Food dyes — added for human appeal, not feline health (cats don’t care what color their food is).

  • Preservatives like BHT and BHA, meat and bone meal, and cheap fillers like wheat, corn, or rice.

The truth is, cats are obligate carnivores. Their bodies are built for one thing: eating meat. Anything else should be used sparingly.

The Hidden Dangers of Processed Food

Even if the ingredients look fine, the way cat food is made can cause harm. Canned foods and kibble are often cooked at extremely high temperatures, which can create Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs).

AGEs can trigger inflammation, allergies, and joint pain — and they’re even linked to cancer. But because AGEs aren’t technically an “ingredient,” pet food companies don’t have to list them on the label.

And get this: the only reason most cats even eat that kibble? It’s coated with a flavoring, which makes it smell appealing. Without that spray, they’d likely refuse it altogether.

Why Smell Matters More Than Taste

Cats have far fewer taste buds than humans or dogs, so they rely primarily on their sense of smell to decide what’s safe to eat.

They can’t taste sweetness, but they’re susceptible to bitter compounds, which helps them avoid spoiled or toxic foods in the wild. That’s why even one “off” smell can make a cat reject their meal — no matter how expensive or “healthy” it claims to be.

Try rinsing off your cat’s kibble to remove the coating sometimes — you’ll see what I mean! Most cats won’t touch it afterward.

How I Took Control of My Cats’ Diet

After learning all this, I couldn’t keep feeding my cats food I didn’t trust. So, I started making their meals myself. It was a lot of work — chopping, freezing, thawing — but the results were incredible.

The vomiting stopped. The constipation stopped. Their coats became shinier, and they actually finished their plates. That’s when I knew it was the diet all along.

The answer was simple: feed cats as nature intended — fresh, meat-based, minimal-ingredient food.

From Kitchen Experiments to CatCrazy Inc.

Of course, preparing raw food every day isn’t easy — especially when you have multiple cats. At one point, my freezer was 75% cat food! So, I decided to take the next step.

That’s how CatCrazy Inc. was born. I built a team of fellow cat lovers (including a food scientist!) to create something better — a complete, balanced, freeze-dried raw food that’s healthy, safe, and convenient.

We developed our first recipe — Crazy Good Chicken Feast — made from USDA-approved chicken that’s frozen within 45 minutes of harvest to lock in nutrients like taurine for heart health.

Our freeze-dried pucks are easy to crumble, rehydrate with a little warm water, and even create a bit of gravy that cats love. No refrigeration, no mess, and no filler — just real food, made the way cats are meant to eat.
